Woodrat Nº 1 comes to us during a period of hyper-intensified political, climactic, governmental and social political activity in our worlds history.

The cover for this first issue entitled CEASEFIRE displays an image of an American Airforce Pilot named Aaron Bushnell who has set himself on fire to protest the ethnic cleansing, cruelty, violence and injustice being played out against the Palestinian people in historical Palestine.

I hesitated to utilise this image. February 2024 was the month of the Chinese New Year. It was the month of US Black History. It was a month which saw major constitutional protection for women's rights in abortion legislation in France. It was a month which deserved to be centered on Palestine and the genocide taking place there.

Looking a little closer at the image of Aaron set aflame, i noticed we could only see his face as pixels representing his anguish. What the image finally represented to me was "the Man on fire". The white man set on fire displayed in this image, to me represents the month of February, in that it speaks literally of a Man being put under fire. As the idiom says, "We're 'lighting the fire under' the man, collectively".

February de-veiled many myths, and brought to light many scandals, and put the worlds collective history, along with it's developed systems and forms of governance, under the microscope with the resulting discoveries projected on the screens of our phones.

I want Woodrat to be a time which we can take, to listen, look, and reflect on some of the issues which have passed during the previous month.

I hope you enjoy this month's issue and look forward to presenting the next.
